Experiences
Point Beach State Forest:
For the past two summers I have had the opportunity to work at Point Beach State Forest located in Two Rivers, WI. My general job duties include checking in campers, answering the telephone, and providing information on the forest and surrounding area. I could’t ask for a better job because I am surrounded by the forest and Lake Michigan. I have learned much about myself through this job. This includes confidence, working independently, and great communication and listening skills. Furthermore, this past summer I had the opportunity to present two nature programs to children and adults of all ages. We had a great turnout for our program with more than sixty people attending! My co-worker, who is also an elementary education major, and myself came up with a presentation and activities, geared toward children. First we led a lecture on carrying capacity and asked for volunteers to demonstrate what this is and how this works. This was followed by another outside activity and short discussion. Overall, I feel that my experience working at Point Beach has really prepared me to be a future educator. Not only have I had the opportunity to work with children, but also with parents. In addition, making a positive first impression and creating a connection with parents is vital.

ACT Tutor/UWSP Courses:
I have had the opportunity to be an ACT tutor for four semesters here at UWSP. I have been in a variety of classrooms ranging in grade, levels, and abilities. I feel that this has provided me with a strong foundation as a future educator. Furthermore, by working with a variety of students and subject areas, I feel very confident in my abilities as a future teacher. Additionally, I feel that by observing my cooperating teacher I can learn effective teaching strategies, but also those that do not work as well. Overall, this will prepare me for teaching my own classroom and discover which techniques work best for my students and me.
I have had many great opportunities and experiences through my education courses here on campus. By preparing lesson plans and teaching students directly I feel capable in my teaching abilities. Furthermore, this has enabled me to work with a diverse group of students and use my strengths to educate children. Many of my education courses have provided me with direct teaching opportunities. This has allowed me to teach independently and with group members. All in all, this had taught me cooperation, responsibility, and great communication skills.
